VA has been working to ma
ke the medical record accessible online to veterans for some years (labs are accessible, but full security has been a work in progress as technology advanced), and full access will begin in the next several months. We already have secure online messaging available; patients can go online & send their doctor a secure private message, and have that doctor respond directly. That discussion goes directly into the medical record. I love the idea of OpenNotes. Transparency and communication is the only way to empower and educate a person about the most intimate and important details of their body. The central person is the PATIENT, for heavens’ sake, and verbal discussions may not make the same impression as seeing things in writing. This study is a big deal, and I hope the impact goes viral.
